Arthritis

Osteoarthritis

Wear-and-tear damage to cartilage can result in bone grinding directly on bones, which causes pain and restricts movement.  This wear-and-tear can occur over and over for many years or it can be hastened by joint injury or infection, and genetic factors aggervate the symptoms.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

In this disease, the body’s immune system attacks joints and inflames the synovium causing swelling, redness and pain.  The dease can destroy cartilage and bone.

Risk Factors:

  • Family History
  • Age
  • Sex
  • Previous Joint Injury
  • Obesity

Arthritis treatments focus on reliving symptoms, prevention of further joint damage, and improving joint function.  You may need to try several different treatments,or combination of treatments, before you determine what works best for you.  New treatments such as gel (i.e. Orthovisc, Supartz, Synvisc) shots, PRP shots (Platelet rich plasma – taken from you own blood), localized cortisone shots, herbal (organic) supplements and electric stimulation along with physical therapy are used with great success here at Garrison Family Medical Group.
