HORMONAL EVALUATION / BIO IDENTICAL HORMONES
Hormone Replacement Therapy is a system of medical treatment for surgically menopausal, perimenopausal and to a lesser extent postmenopausal woman.
HRT is in various forms. It generally provides low dosages of one or more estrogens, progestin and sometime testosterone. In women who have had a hysterectomy, an estrogen compound is usually given without progesterone, a therapy referred to as "unopposed estrogen therapy".
HRT may be delivered to the body via patches, tablets, creams, troches, IUDs, vaginal rings, gels, more rarely injections. Our medical providers can recommend the best treatment for you from perimenopause through menopause. HRT is only given as a short term relief from menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, irregular menstruation, fat redistribution, vaginal dryness, low libido.
You may have your blood and saliva hormone levels checked: The right dose of hormones for you is the lowest dose of estrogen that treats your menopausal symptoms combined with enough progesterone to protect your uterus from cancer. During reproductive years and peri-menopause, estrogen and progesterone levels may vary throughout the menstrual cycle and during each day. Checking hormone levels during this time may not be beneficial, but any symptoms you are experiencing can be treated accordingly.
“Bioidentical” custom-compounded hormones:
Some practitioners prescribe custom-compounded "bioidentical hormones" which contain one or more natural hormones mixed in differing amounts. These products not only contain the active hormone(s), but also other ingredients to create a cream, gel, tablet or suppository.
